Meet the desert before sunrise on this 2-hour AAT Kings outing, watching the Field of Light glow against a brightening sky as you sip a hot drink, Uluru in the distance.
This two-hour sunrise tour from AAT Kings takes you into Bruce Munro's Field of Light, an installation of 50,000 solar-powered, handcrafted frosted glass spheres and stems laid out across desert ground within sight of Uluru. You arrive in darkness, walk the paths that thread between the glowing forms, then climb to the Dune Top viewing area with tea, coffee or hot chocolate in hand as the sky changes colour. When the sun comes up behind Uluru and light floods across to Kata Tjuta behind you, the installation itself dims for the day.
The tour runs in English and includes hotel pickup and drop-off from four locations around Yulara: Sails in the Desert, Desert Gardens Hotel at Ayers Rock Resort, the Outback Pioneer Bar and Bottle Shop, and Ayers Rock Campground. Travel is by air-conditioned coach with a driver/guide who gives the background to the artwork en route and on the dune. Entry to the installation and the hot drinks are included, breakfast is not.
It suits travellers who want a short, well-organised morning activity rather than a long expedition. Reviewers repeatedly praise the guides and the atmosphere, and one couple with mobility issues said they managed the shorter route and still had a good morning. The main caveat in reviews is value for money, with some feeling the time in the light field was short for the price.
A few practical points will help you get the most out of an early, cold desert morning.
Common issues. The recurring complaint is value for money: the platform's review summary notes some travellers wanted more time in the light field to better match the price, and at least one reviewer said outright it did not present good value. One reviewer found the guide hard to understand and reported that many lights were not working on their visit, while another had clouds block the sunrise itself. Weather is outside anyone's control, and the cold early start is worth preparing for. Breakfast is not included, only hot drinks.
Yes, pickup and drop-off are included from four Yulara locations: Sails in the Desert, Desert Gardens Hotel at Ayers Rock Resort, Outback Pioneer Bar and Bottle Shop, and Ayers Rock Campground. You select your pickup point when booking.
Entry to the Field of Light installation, tea, coffee or hot chocolate at the sunrise viewing area, an experienced driver/guide, air-conditioned coach travel, and hotel pickup are all included. Breakfast is not included.
The tour runs for two hours, from hotel pickup through the light field walk, sunrise viewing, and drop-off back in Yulara.
The visit involves walking paths through the light field and up a hill to the Dune Top viewing area. One reviewer with mobility issues said they took a shorter route and still enjoyed the views and sunrise, so raise any concerns with the operator before booking.
Bring a camera, as listed, and warm clothing for a cold desert dawn. Comfortable shoes help for the walk through the installation.
You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund, according to the listing.
