Two days of camping from Alice Springs with Autopia Tours. Sunset at Uluru, sunrise among the Kata Tjuta domes, and a night of Outback stars with a small group of fellow travelers.

Overview

This two-day camping trip starts with hotel pickup in Alice Springs and rolls south through open desert country to Uluru, with a guide talking through the history, geology and Aboriginal heritage of the region along the way. One traveller remarked that the commentary made the long drive pass quickly. After lunch at camp, the group collects extra passengers from Ayers Rock or Yulara Resort and enters Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.

The first afternoon centres on Uluru itself: the Cultural Centre for Anangu traditions, then guided walks at the base taking in Mutitjulu Waterhole, Kuniya Piti, Kantju Gorge and ancient rock art. Sunset at the rock follows, then dinner and a relaxed night at a private campground near Uluru, sleeping either in a bush swag under the stars or a permanent eco tent. Day two starts before dawn for sunrise, then moves to Kata Tjuta for a guided walk through Walpa Gorge or the Valley of the Winds, weather permitting. The tour ends at Yulara Resort / Ayers Rock after lunchtime and does not return to Alice Springs.

It suits people with moderate fitness who are happy on rocky, uneven ground, helping with camp duties, and sharing bathroom facilities. Meals, park entry, a driver guide and air-conditioned bus travel are all part of the package.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points will shape how this trip goes, from desert temperatures to shared camp work.

Common issues. The tour only ends at Yulara Resort / Ayers Rock, so anyone needing to get back to Alice Springs must arrange that separately, and outbound flights should not be booked before 2:15 pm. Sleeping bags are an extra for swag campers unless brought from home. Camping uses shared bathroom facilities, and guests take part in meal preparation and basic camp duties. One reviewer noted the campsite itself had no view of Uluru. Itinerary changes can happen due to road conditions, cultural requirements or park closures, and the Valley of the Winds walk depends on conditions.

Before You Reserve A Seat

What is included in the price?

One night at a permanent outback campsite near Uluru, one breakfast, two lunches and one dinner, guided bush walks, all national park entry fees, an accredited driver guide, air-conditioned bus travel and onboard drinking water are all included. Camping gear depends on the option chosen: swag campers get a bush swag, while eco tent guests get bedding and a mattress. Hotel pickup from Alice Springs is included.

Where does the tour pick up and drop off?

Pickup is from Alice Springs hotels, with the default meeting point at Stay at Alice Springs Hotel (Aurora), and a few other pickup locations available on request. You should advise your accommodation details when booking. The tour ends at Yulara Resort / Ayers Rock only, at approximately 12:30 to 1:30 pm on day two, and does not return to Alice Springs.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

Only for the swag option. Sleeping bags are required for swag camping and are not included, so bring your own or contact the operator's team for help arranging one. Eco tent guests get a mattress, sheets, pillow and case provided.

Is the tour suitable for children or people with limited mobility?

Unaccompanied minors are not allowed, and the listing requires a moderate fitness level for walks over rocky, uneven and exposed terrain. Strollers and oversize luggage cannot be brought. The walks and camp setting are fairly rugged, so this trip is best suited to travellers comfortable with that level of activity.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Yes, you can cancel up to 14 days in advance for a full refund. Personal travel insurance is recommended but not included, and personal expenses plus any meals not listed in the itinerary are your own cost.

When should I book my flight home?

The tour returns to Yulara / Ayers Rock at approximately 12:30 to 1:30 pm on day two, so the listing advises against booking an outbound flight before 2:15 pm. It also suggests allowing extra time for unexpected delays on the day.
